Porto Palace Hotel & Conference Center constitutes a unique hospitality choice in Thessaloniki. Housed in a historical building of 1913 and preserving its industrial architecture, Porto Palace Hotel stands out among other hotels in town.
The initial reference to the construction of the building that now hosts the Porto Palace Hotel dates back to 1913. Actual construction commenced in 1914 with the creation of two stone ground-floor structures along the seafront. Additionally, the coastal railway line established in 1893 had a stop at this location, and remnants of the train tracks were discovered in the Grand Pietra Hall.
The park was located on Bech Tsinar Street (meaning “5 plane trees” in Turkish). Bech Tsinar, also known as Princes Park, was a vast area that was connected with eastern Thessaloniki via tram. Within the park, there were restaurants, beer shops, taverns, cabarets, a theater, and even an ice-skating rink. However, in the 1920s, its popularity waned, and by the 1930s, it was significantly downgraded due to the industrial development in the surrounding area.
In 1920, the second phase of constructing the three-story building commenced, facing 26th Octovriou Street.
Moses Marpurgo, the original owner, transfers the property to Georgiou Bros, who convert it into a tannery. The company goes bankrupt in 1932, and the National Bank and the Ionian Bank take ownership of the building. Subsequently, the bank, for the following 50 years, rents it out periodically to private individuals, using it as a storage facility for grains or leathers, with no one showing interest in its maintenance.
The current owners obtain the building and utilize it as a leather warehouse. In 1994 the building is designated as a preservable structure and recognized as a modern monument.
The transformation of this industrial space into a five-star hotel took several years, and the hotel officially opened on September 9, 2005.
